X11 configuration problems preventing RL 5

After a number of years absence from Linux I ve just installed SuSE 10.1 on my second hard drive. I had been trying to get multiple monitors running on a Radeon 7000 vid card. In process of this using the Runlevel 5 GUI card configuration utility (I dont remember what its called sorry)I misconfigured the video card, rebooted and could not get back to Runlevel 5 to log in. I booted into failsafe mode and vi'ed the /etc/xorg.conf file to repair the damage I had done. The problem seems to be that when entering runlevel 5 the existing GUI based program settings change xorg.conf back to the misconfigured settings and Im stuck right back where I was. Is there any way to get back to default settings without burning things down and reinstalling? I could not figure out how to do this either from Failsafe or Rescue. Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Thanks
Carr
