No, the partition isn't 100% used. I have saved a lot of data after the problem occured. In fact, I have only one OS on the machine, and lot of space ought to be empty. And as far as I know, the /tmp folder never occupies any memory. Am I wrong?

Did u check the log files ?
also redirect the errors to some file n print it here
e.g startx 2> err.txt
Might you can tell us your current Distribution ?
I had the same problem once on slackware 10.0
"Connection reset by peer"
I recieved this error too because my XF86Config was wrong configured..
check out xorg.conf or XF86Config in /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XF86Config if the settings there are right for your system..
