x server and shrike not loading gui

Okay, I've been trying to install red hat 9 on my laptop and the installation seems to go flawlessly. After successfully installing it, it says to reboot the machine to finish setup. It goes through its boot routine and checks and has the green "ok" on every check. Things look good up to this point. Then when it goes to load up the gui an error comes up saying that it can't load the x server and there is a problem with shrike or something, I can't remember exactly what it said, i'll be able to post the error message more specifically later. But any thoughts what could be causing this? I was trying to install the gnome gui, haven't tried kde, maybe that would work instead. I didn't tamper with the installation configurations either, i just accepted the defaults on everything. Any chance my cd's are bad? I bought the distribution cd's with the book a year ago and I had previously successfully installed it on another machine last year but now it is just being fussy. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you using relatively new hardware? Red Hat 9 is a bit old (Win2k-ish, I believe), maybe your video card isn't supported by the kernel on RH9? I'm guessing if it's a newer piece of hardware that the install went fine because it just defaulted to the VESA driver. But maybe your laptop doesn't support VESA or the old VESA doesn't work on newer hardware... Just shooting in the dark here.

I have a radeon video card and it defaults to that one, so I don't think that is the problem.

On second thought you might be on to something, i just noticed while on the boot sequence it said 1....2...3...4 starting x server failed to locate VESA. But during the installation I pointed it to the correct video card. So what's up with that?

*EDIT* Also I double checked my video card and I have an AIT Radeon IGP 320M. I just tried reinstalling redhat for the umteenth time now and in looking through the list of video cards it doesn't have the exact one. It has a bunch of Radeon video cards but it defaults to ATI Radeon Mobility U1. So is that really what could be causing it? the fact that it doesn't support my video card. Is there something I can do about that because I'd really like to get redhat working on my laptop.

I would try downloading something newer like Knoppix Live CD and see if the gui comes up.

If it does, you can either recompile your kernel on RH9 or download Fedora or CentOS (clone of RH Enterprise Linux).
