I have exactly the same setup as you - but I'm using Fedora 10 on a Dell Latitude D600 connecting to an Orange LiveBox. So, although I cannot help with the Ubuntu side of things, I *can* tell you that it is possible to connect a D600 to an Orange LiveBox - Fedora 10 works "out of the box" with this setup - I just had to choose my wireless access point and type in my encryption key asnd I was away. I have my LiveBox set to use WPA rather than WEP and it still works fine, although on previous Fedora versions, I had to start the Network Manager service manually and something called WPASupplicant or something (can't remember the exact name) under GNOME.
I guess my first stop would be to check what type of wireless encryption you're using to try and connect.
Really sorry I can't be of more help, but don't give up hope - as I said, you can connect Linux on a D600 to a LiveBox - how it is done with your distro is a different matter, although I still reckon it's possible.
Good luck.
