1 - go to transgaming.com
2 - go to download section, then cvs tree
3 - read the agreement
4 - To checkout a new CVS respository:

1. cvs -dserver:cvs@cvs.transgaming.org:/cvsroot login
2. When prompted for the password enter "cvs"
3. cvs -z3 -dserver:cvs@cvs.transgaming.org:/cvsroot co winex

5 - cd winex
6 - ./configure
7 - make depend && make
8 - make install
9 - install a game
10 - play a game

10 easy steps. have fun.

There is a script that does that here and installs it and everything, and I had no problems using this, it's all automated. Just sit back and let it install.

ok well heres the problem....
the first time i tried it, it worked with no trouble....got into the configuring stage then showed an error (outdated drivers) i downloaded these drivers and went into it again using both of ur metods and every time i type the script in, it skips to the 3rd stage (configuring) for about 2 seconds then the whole te5rminal window closes. using the regular way, when it asks for the password i type in cvs and it quit goes right back to the shell prompt so i tried typing in a wrong password and it said it was incorrect....but when its right it justs quits....what am i doing wrong?

delete your hidden .cvs folder in /home/username and try again, preferably not in X mode -- use CTRL+ALT+F6 and login first.

Just a quick question following on this topic. I understand the description here to get the CVS version for linux, but is there anyway i can download on a Win Xp machine and then copy it across and install on my linux box?

I'll tell you why i run mandrake 9.1 at home but i don't have a net connection there, so i use the net at my folks place but they run XP.
