Why won't it work

I am having big problems with my redhat 9. I am installing on a laptop and keep encountering problems. I got to my desktop for the first time this evening. I turned her off and now when i reboot i can only log in as root and i end up with a command line. I have tried "startx" but just get server error messages. i don't understand why i can't get back to my desktop.
Please help.
Thankyou.

You "turned her off"? Then you're probably
in a revocery console that wants you run

fsck.ext2
fsck.ext3

By shutting the box down properly ;)

Turning it off is BAD practice. Todays
journaling file-systems are reasonably
safe, even in such case, but there's
always the risk of data loss ...

Cheers,
Tink
