pctel modems are known as winmodems and are driven by software. You need to find the relevant software package for the modem. Install the software and follow the guide to get a connection.

Hi Buvanesh,

An up-to-date driver for most PCTel modems is located here:

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pcte...9-rht-6.tar.gz

The installation procedure is:

tar xvzf pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-6.tar.gz
cd pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-6
sudo ./setup

If it doesn't work, please let me know - there is one category of PCTel modem that requires a different driver. The setup script will tell you if your modem is not supported.

Regards,
Jeff

Hi,

I am having trouble with my Conexant HSF modem. I managed to get the proper RPM and installed it successfully on RHEL4.

Ran wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf and it said that it detected the modem at /dev/ttySFS0. But now when I dial, the modem picks up the line and dials with the dial-tone going on in the background.

You guessed right! :-). I can't connect to the net.

I had the same problem with this modem on WinXP, but I was able to solve the problem when I applied dialling rules by putting a "," (that created a pause of some sort for the modem to initialize dialling in the pulse mode).

In Kppp, when I query the modem I get the message "unable to create the lock file" even as root. I tried diabling the create lock file option. Still no luck.

I have been on this for the last couple of days and the only breakthrough so far has been in getting the modem installed.

Problem Solved

Hi,

I don't really know what exactly caused the file lock problem, but having edited the file /etc/ppp/options as:
lock
crtscts
defaultroute
noauth

and after subsequent reboots the problem was solved. Also, I found out that the link /dev/modem pointing to my internal modem /dev/ttySFSH0 was getting deleted everytime I rebooted. So I added the line,

ln -s /dev/ttySFSH0 dev/modem

to the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file and cleared that hurdle.
