why cant i connect to the web thru a wireless modem

hullo folks,
i need some help here i have a wireless usb modem and am using the Ubuntu server 12.04. i want to use it for my internet connection to access the repositories. so far i have not succeeded but am sure there is a way round it. is there some kind of program i can use in the terminal to achieve this.

You probably need to install firware for your wifi card to work.

Does your wifi card show up when you try to configure it?

Is it shown in dmesg, &/or lspci?
