What I installed now on "old" laptops or "old" PCs with an active usage:
- TinyCoreLinux (a kind of a pain but WONDERFULL after the setups which take time)
- Mint 13 xfce
Personally I would give a try to LUBUNTU (never tried it; probably a bit like Mint13 xfce but with lower memory use) or a Debian with fluxbox windowsmanager.
I tested hardware with knoppix, puppy, partedmagic, archbang: these are good but whith with too long boot times in my opinion for a daily activ repeated use.
My recommendation: play around with all these distros (CD boot and USB boot).. and choose what you feel is the best for you.

No heat issues
You could call me "crazy", since, I'm using Linux 3.1.10-slacko, No extreme heat and lesser heat dissipation through the vents. In other words, the old laptop is running a lot cooler.
I made a decision, based on my own experience. I will not venture to tweak with other Linux OS on this old laptop.
Why?
This Linux 3.1.10-slacko is given me the results and meets my demands without any critical issues, is best to leave it alone.
There is an old saying: If the old equipment is working fine and meets your demands, leave it alone.
P.S.
One of my neighbors sold me today for 65 dollars an old 2006, desktop tower, P-4 Prescott processor, 512 ram, 180-GHD, 32 bit ATI sound card, 56k/with a 10/100 LAN card. 128meg Nvidea card, 2 cdr/rw drives, This is going to be my next Linux project. I want to upgrade the ram at least to 4.
Then I will twEAK with it. It does have the original WIN-98 CD's. I forgot to add. "NO Monitor, no mouse or No keyboard. Lucky for me , I could buy those used and very cheap.
My IBM A22m (512MB ram) (Pentium 3) runs AntiX quite comfortably as a rolling release install. As always. It is up to you on what feels best and works best for you.

I assume by '4' you mean '4 GB'. Its very unlikely that the chipset in an old P4 presscott will support more than 2GB.
ATI never made sound cards (as far as I know anyway), its probably an ATI chipset with onbaord ac97 sound.
Might as well pull the 56k modem, its probably useless with linux.

I can understand getting a 2nd hand monitor. IMO 2nd hand meece and keyboards arent worth it.
Before installing any OS on your laptop, you can checkout anyone of your choice LiveCD OS.

Virus on Windows, will affect booting Linux Slakko Puppy?
Hello everyone.
Linux slako Puppy still playing in the hard drive, but lately one of my dependants, decided to boot this old laptop and used win-98, not knowing downloaded, a trojan worm virus, that was supposely a free educational software program for the kids (My kid). The good thing was, that the anti virus program Comodo inmediatly detected and isolated the virus from start and Then the call from the kitchen for help was heard. HELP ME Hon, I got a virus! , while I was working on the car.
Knowing this, I did all the preventive scanning and it was isolated properly. Yet, I booted linux slako puppy and it was working normally. This linux os does not
have antivirus.
My naive and humbly questions are:
1-Could a windows os virus affect any of the linux os boot ?
2-Is there any Linux antivirus that anyone will recommned for those win os files?
or no need to worry about linux overall?
I'm open to any suggestions, trials or updates.
Respectfully
Redpope

Most the time the viruses made for windows don't work in Linux. Just think a virus as a program that somebody wrote to damage your computer, so that program was wrote to work under the windows environment which will have no effect under your Linux Operating System. If you already have a anti virus software installed in windows and is working fine then you are good to go, If you don't have an anti virus program then you can install one under Linux and scan your windows partition from there.
You can start a different thread under the Linux software section of the forum and ask for advice on what anti virus for Linux is well recommended.
As a measure of security you can talk to other users that if they are using the computer just to surf the web and check emails to do it under the Linux partition, if they dont have the need for a windows specific program
