Where to store source .tar.gz

I've recently been wondering if there is a typical place to store source .tar.gz archives. I have always kept them in a single directory in my user's home, but I seem to be finding evidence that /usr/src is a common place to store sources. Is that correct?

I always keep them in /usr/local/src. Together with my SlackBuild scripts.

Not everyone has write permissions to /usr/src, so anywhere in your home directory is a common alternative. On my system its /home/userid/downloads/src.
