What is the mechanism for RHEL to update programes?

Hi,
I a question regarding how are programs updated.

When using RPM/YUM or any other package manager, is the old version of that program deleted and then follow by an installation of the latest update?

example:
nautilus-2.16.2-7.el5 update to nautilus-2.91.6-3.el5

will nautilus-2.16.2-7.el5 be uninstalled and then follow by an installation of nautilus-2.91.6-3.el5?

Yes the old version is removed and the new version is installed. Just remember though that if you have nautilus running during the time that it is updated, you will have to close nautilus and reopen it to use the newly updated version.

Are you talking about online, or on the command line?

As far as yum on the command line, do a "yum --help" and you will see the commands you can use. Also do a "man yum" for more help and information. Use yum search to search for a particular package.

That would depend on what repo you are talking about; For example, http://rpmfusion.org/

To add to that last post of mine though, rpmfusion is a merge of livna, dribble, and freshrpms.

http://rpm.livna.org/
http://freshrpms.net/
http://dribble.org.uk/

The links are on the rpmfusion site, but I figured I would help you out.
