What does the "1" in "ata1" mean in dmesg log output?

Basic question: What does the "1" mean in dmesg log output shown below:

[ 2.105336] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133
Also, what does the "00" in the "ata1.00" mean?

If I can manage to understand this basic question, then it is likely I can get a final answer to more complicated thread.

Thanks,
bg

And I mod-slapped the intentional diversion ...
