My hobby is testing out new Linux distros. I currently have Fedora, Mandrake 9.2, Slackware 9.1, Redhat 9 (not used often), Knoppix 3.3 (on my harddrive), and a version of College Linux which doesn't seem to work.

I am a web designer, software tester (another hobby), and beginning programmer. I also enjoy playing games on Windoze 2000 every once in a while.

I would like to know if anyone has any recommendations for what distro(s) I should try next. I will be getting a little more haddrive space soon (right now I can install up to 4 more systems).

I have tried these versions and could not get them to install or I could not get them to work properly: College Linux, Debian 3.0r2, Turbolinux 7.0, and Lycoris Desktop/LX Update 3.

Also, what is a good site to find isos and a variety of good distros?

You could broaden your horizons a little by installing BSD next.

okay, if you want to keep testing distros (perhaps to understand linux), try Linux from Scratch (LFS) and it is what is sounds like, linux from nothing but downloaded pure untainted source

Try again Debian.

Try Gentoo. It takes several ideas from the BSDs. So it is quite different.

If you get bored from Linux go for the other Unixes.

I have had some problems with Debian graphically (the X System) and I have heard that the installation is a little difficult (but I have also heard this of Slackware and it went well).

I think I would like a Debian-based distro that works well. I have tried Knoppix which works besides the fact that I haven't configured LILO correctly yet. I like the Debian-based interface. Are there any other good debian-based distros (besides debian, knoppix, and mandrake)?

I tried Gentoo which wouldn't load the live-evaluation and it had some strange problem on load where symbols flew down the screen and then stopped. I was too lazy to try to compile everything myself because I have heard that can take many days.

I will probably try FreeBSD soon as jailbait suggested. I may also end up trying LFS as TheOneAndOnlySM suggested because I may be able to learn about the Linux system better.

If anyone has used or heard of any [preferably lesser-known] distros that may be good for a web designer / program tester / learning programmer please let me know.

I've tried many distros myself. I like Debian. Apt-get is regarded by many as the best. My favorite Debian-based distro (I've tried them all) is Mepis. Slick,
easy install.....everything detected and everything works.
BTW, Mandrake is RPM (aka RedHat) based, not Debian.
