If I remember correctly, it either gets saved in /var/mail/ as an ASCII file which you can open with your favourite editor.
The root mail would be /var/mail/root
(Your Mileage May Vary)

Actually, the saved mail are collected in a text file called $HOME/mbox. They can be viewed by
Code:
mail -f $HOME/mbox
/var/mail on Red Hat is a link to /var/spool/mail which is the real post office, that is the repository of the mail currently in your (not archived) mailbox. If you want to exit from mail without saving, you can type x instead of q.
