Voodoo3 in mandrake 9.1

hi guys,
need your help on this one.
for two day i am trying to get quakeworld to run on mandrake 9.1 i have read about 200 howto's and searched google for anything that crossed my mind.
i managed to get quake running with fuhquke-gl/glmqwcl BUT its fucking slow.by slow i mean like running windows xp on a 386.
i guess its driver related. tuxracer works properly so i guess it has nothing to do with hardwareacceleration.
i typed glxinfo and thats what i get :

[che23@localhost che23]$ glxinfo

it says direct rendering works.

i looked into the XF86Config ( is there a relevant difference between the one in usr/X11R6/bin and the one in etc/x11/ ?)

it says:
Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "3Dfx Interactive, Inc."
BoardName "Voodoo3 (generic)"
Option "power_saver"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
Device "device1"
Monitor "monitor1"
DefaultColorDepth 16

Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

Subsection "Display"

Hoax, I am going back a long way now, as I dont use Mandrake anymore, so the following may not be relevant. I used also to have a voodoo3.
With Mdk8.2, the kdm login used to interfere with the tdfx driver.
I got round it by using the the gdm login instead.

I used to ask questions here:
http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php

there's a few knowledgeable people there who may help you.
