I'm usually horrible at spotting make errors, but the last line above stated that there wasn't a .config in /usr/src/linux
I generally frown on using kernel packages from a distro, so my advice is to download a full source from one of the kernel mirrors, change the symbolic link of /usr/src/linux to the newly downloaded kernel, build a new kernel, then re-try the vmware-config.pl.
