using USB port on montor for mouse

I have a Dell M60 laptop running RHE3, connected to 2 Dell flat screens, and a USB mouse. The mouse works fine when connected directly to a USB port on the laptop, but I'd like to use one of the USB ports on the monitor instead. The monitor comes with a cable that connects it to the USB port. When I try to boot with the mouse connected to the monitor, the mouse doesn't work. I used to have a USB keyboard and could daisy-chain the mouse to that - but the monitor is different as it isn't a USB device. Do I have to change something in the XF86Config? I wouldn't think that I'd have to mount the monitor as a USB device...

thanks

What does this command output?
Code:
ls /dev/usb
Never heard of a monitor with USB ports on it, that's just plain weird.
