using tar as a backup method

Hi all.

I am trying to find the best (and most inexpensive) method of backing up four servers runing fedora core 2 onto one server.

Right now I am considering using tar, gziping then ftp'ing the file across onto the 'backup server'

my questions are,

1. If I have a disaster of some kind, can I just reload the basic OS and ftp the tar ball onto the new machine (a clone of the old one) and have all the links, symbolic links, file rights and so on preserved and have a bootable machine.

2. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you.

thanks.

Would be running mandrake, but the guy who set it all up before I started in on it wanted fedora core 2.
