usb won't work in printer/ scanner - gives error message

printer: hp officejet pro 6830
purpose: scan directly from printer/scanner to usb

I have 1 usb that works with the printer when I hit "scan, then memory device, then put in usb."
I have 1 usb that does NOT work with the printer when I do the same thing.

The usb that works likely has infected files so I bought a new usb. I originally formatted the new usb to linux, but when that didn't work in the printer/scanner, in which I got the error message, I then formatted it to windows. But that didn't work either. The printer error message said "corrupted or uses an unsupported format such as NTFS" - both times.

The fdisk -l readout for usb that WORKS:
boot: *
start: 64
end: 31457216
sectors: 31457216
id: b
size: 15Gb
type: w95 fat 32

The fdisk -l readout for usb that DOESN'T WORK:
boot: (doesn't say anything/ no symbols...)
start: 32
end: 30605311
sectors: 30605280
size: 14.6 Gb
id: c
type: w95 fat 32 (LBA)

The main thing I notice is that the "start" for the working usb is 64 and for the non-working usb is 32. The non-working usb was formatted in a 32-bit computer. The working one was never formatted, just used as it came, and had windows files saved to it.

I saved 1 file from my computer to the scanning non-working usb just to make sure I could save there.

What do I need to do to get the non-working usb to work and/or give a fdisk readout like the other one? Did I ruin the usb by formatting it to linux and then back to windows? When it formatted to windows, it erased with "zeroes" automatically.

Thanks!
jo

Let me see if I understand what you are trying to do. As I read, you want the scanning application scan the document and save it directly to a USB drive without operator intervention. If I am misinterpreting your intent, please straighten me out.

Just as an aside, I use Xsane to scan from my HP Officejet 5740. It scans the document into Xsane, and from Xsane I can save it to any directory I wish, including the USB drives.

As a shot in the dark, have you tried saving a file to the USB drive to verify that you have write permissions.

Are you trying to scan and print directly to a usb with no computer involved? How did you format the usb that doesn't work?

I'd recommend installing gparted and deleting all the partitions on that usb(backup data on drive first!) and replacing with one fat32 partition.

It is possible that your usb is toast, was it a cheap one? However if it works with a computer it should be fine.

Some HP models do have the capability to scan directly to a USB flash drive plugged into the printer. As far as I know FAT32 should work however your partition ID on the non working drive is c versus b. While a computer might not care how the drive is formatted FAT32 or FAT32 LBA the printer might.

As suggest delete the MBR and start over.

yes, i can scan directly to the usb - hp instructions make that clear. and yes, the usb is working fine.

when it came to formatting the usb, i used a command line: mkfs.ntfs /dev/sdXX

what command line would i use to format it to fat32 and NOT fat32 LBA?

thx.
