The log is blank for the time of the crash.

The crash happened at 01:18.
BTW: Thank you for the help so far, I may not have fixed the USB problem but am getting a far better understanding of how the file system works.

do you have any hotplug logs in /var/log/ ???

No problem. Don't thank me yet though, it isn't fixed

no, i mean a /var/log/usb-hotplug.log or something like that? is that what you are posting from?

/var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog are all I seem to have. Both are missing any logs of the time of the crash.

i think the best thing to do is print the output of hotplug to a text file. I'm leaving work right now. I'll jump back on when i get home and have a better idea of what to do since i'll have a couple nix boxes. I am working on this from memory right now.
