updating firefox

After doing a recovery on my Acer aspire one with linux v 1.0.9 everything was OK, but firefox wanted to do an update so I downloaded it but I have no clue on how to get it installed. This is the first time I have ever done anything concerning linux and don't understand the process yet, but would like to learn. Got some books on linux, but they are not making much sense at the moment as I just started to read them.

What archive format you downloaded, *.bz2 or *tar.gz?

Usually it is "firefox-10.0.2.tar.bz2" so you do it this simple, get into a terminal and cd into the folder where your firefox*bz2 downloaded file is located then issue these three successive commands:

Quote:
tar -xjv firefox-*.bz2

cd ./firefox

./firefox
That should start firefox.

While you enjoy using linux you can read and consult a good tutorial download this to your drive.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

As I said I am completely new to linux and I'm trying to read your download. It may be several days before I figure out exactly what you are trying to tell me to do.

Linux v 1.0.9. It has firefox 2.0. Running on an Acer Aspire one AOA 110. This is the first time I have even tried to get into the progamming side of the computer. I usually work with Windows and that is very limited

Firefox 10 is the latest version & I believe the version of linpus is out dated.
You'll most likely need to get a distro that's a little more up to date.

unfortunately when acer put "linpus light" on netbooks it thought of the netbook as an appliance ( read toaster )
and as such you do not add software to a toaster .

"linpus light" WAS based on a old and unsupported version of fedora " fedora 8" .Fedora is no at 16 . 4 years have gone by.

so basically you DO NOT install firefox 10
you live with firefox2

or

install a new operating system on the netbook
something like Mint Linux
http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
or ubuntu
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
