Might help if you told us what version/distro of Linux you're running. Update procedures differ from one distro to another.
Also, Oracle9 is old, and comes with a requirements document. Have you followed those instructions? I believe it has specific instructions for SuSE and RedHat enterprise distros, and (since you'd be using those distros for a server), they come with support. Have you contacted them?
