Update issues in linux mint 20.2 UMA

I took my laptop to computer store to install 20.2 UMA. Did not feel comfortable doing it myself...The man was not as well versed in Linux as I had hoped. Rather than do a fresh install as my friend suggested I have him do, he went through all the versions of linux mint that had taken place after my version stopped being supported,

That was late August. Starting September, I have had some issues on some updates,
I use the regular update on UMA as well as one my friend told me I can use in terminal: ./update
I have saved the results of some of those updates....

Right now, regular UMA update shows my system is up to date.....
**To be honest, I have questions about the terminal update command as to if an update really occured when it says at the end :
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded..
THat looks like the upgrade was not done...
I would ask the creator of that command, but that is not possible now.

**Is the regular UMA update info reliable ? If it says it is up to date ?

One terminal update in September said
Warning: No support for locale: en_US.utf8

**Should I do something to fix that ?

All the results below are in the order that I did the updates.
THe most recent problem started 10-5 with the regular UMA update message

**Anything change ?

I put asterics in front of questions I wrote.I sent all of this in hopes someone in the forum can help me fix whatever they see needs fixed on my linux.
Hopefully you can tell if the terminal command results that say
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded..
really mean there were no changes.

** AS I asked above, should I just rely on the UMA regular update manager ?
That would be easier.I think I could click on that and see those details.... Yet, the command update does make me utilize the terminal.
I am open to any tips as to confirming my system IS up to date in all ways.
Maybe you know other commands I can use in terminal for that ?
I will be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Hi magister

People usually would say linux mint 20.2 o linux mint UMA instead of just UMA

Quote:
**Should I do something to fix that ?
If there is everyting ok with your language settings i wouldn't do anything about your locale.
Locale settings include things like system language, decimal separator (, or .), first day of the week (monday or sunday), charset, default size of paper ...

for more information type:

Code:
maggie@linux ~ $ man locale
or search "man locale" in google

the update command you type seems to be a script in your home directory, not a program in mint distribution.

If it's a script you can read the commands with:

Code:
maggie@linux ~ $ cat update
(cat prints in the terminal the content of a text file, for more information see the man pages, man cat)

In linux mint you have a graphical tool to perform updates that is more friendly for beginners, just look for "update manager" in your mint menu

If you want to update via terminal, the commands you need is apt, if you want to see all the options you can type

Code:
maggie@linux ~ $ man apt
The most used lines are:

apt update --- To update from your linux distribution servers the list of programs and versions available

apt upgrade --- To upgrade any program upgradable on your system

to be able to do these tasks, apt needs root privileges so you would execute:
Code:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
here the sudo command executes something as a super user (Super User do --> sudo)

Quote:
maggie@linux ~ $ apt-get update
when you typed "apt-get update" is the same as "apt update" so you should do

Code:
maggie@linux ~ $ sudo apt-get update
Quote:
maggie@linux ~ $ --fix-missing
--fix-missing is not a command, is an option of apt-get

maybe you wanted to type

Code:
maggie@linux ~ $ sudo apt-get update --fix-missing
But before doing that you should read what this command is doing

Code:
man apt-get
and then search for --fix-missing.

To search for a string reading man pages, type / and then the string and enter. And then "n" for the next occurrence, or "N" for the previous.

You should get the same help googling "man apt-get"

It seems to me that your system is ok by now.

Using the terminal is a good way to do things but if you are a newbie you may prefer using graphical tools until you get more familiar with terminal commands.

Be careful when executing anything with root privileges, you should know what that commands are doing or you may end up breaking the system.

man pages are your friends, you can read them with man command or googling it.

Racho,
Thanks for tip about not saying Uma by itself.
REsults of man locale
LOCALE(1) Linux User Manual LOCALE(1)

NAME
locale - get locale-specific information

SYNOPSIS
locale [option]
locale [option] -a
locale [option] -m
locale [option] name...
Shouldn't it say English ? What,if anything, do I do on that screen?

Yes, I do use "update manager".Apparently I could just use and rely on that? A friend gave me the script ./update for me to get used to using terminal... I am still trying to figure out when I use terminal, and there is an update. why @ the end it does not show a #
on upgrade.. ? Also how do I create the blue box around terminal entries in this post ? Thanks much !

I am guessing the person that installed Mint created a script called update to run the command sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade or something similar.

Quote:

There was probably something wrong with that repository. Nothing to worry about it happens.

W: Problem unlinking the file /var/cache/apt/srcpkgcache.bin - RemoveCaches (13: Permission denied)
If you try to run a manual update at the same time the operating system is trying to check for updates you might run into file locks. This happens when the system is first started. After a few minutes when the system clears the file locks you can then run a manual update. Again this is normal. Also if you do not use sudo...

Quote:
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
All that basically says is no new updates were available and no changes were made to your system. This is normal.

Impossible to tell there isn't enough enough information to know why you saw a locale error.

So yes your system is up to date in all ways.

michaelk,

Thanks for your reply. I did the 2nd post due to no replies on first/ it was too long ! I will make shorter posts in the future and not duplicate. Now that I am understanding more commands,

I agree, the command ./update likely shortened the "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade"

THose errors like "Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: Permission denied)"
I understood from another person's reply that it occured due to I do not have full root priveledges...
Did I misunderstand, or is that why ?

Next time I have an alert to update,I will use update manager and I will ask to see specifics, (seem to recall seeing that option)
which I have not done b4....
Will updating there tell me/suggest I remove something like the terminal update does when it is no longer needed?

Thanks much !

Yes, no problem with that

Also how do I create the blue box around terminal entries in this post ?
when editing try button "go advanced". Then you will edit the text in an editor with more options, and there is a button there to insert quotes and code, if you click on them it will appear [QU0TE] and [/QU0TE] (or CODE instead) everything you type between these two tags will be shown in a blue box.

REsults of man locale ...
man is for manual, is the documentation of every command so you can learn how to use commands reading these man pages

You should begin with the basics: what is terminal, basic concepts like file, directory, path..., what is a command and the arguments, how to use basic commands like ls, cd, mkdir... and so on.

Googling a bit I found this link:

https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/command...ers#1-overview

Give it a try

Yes, it might suggest running using the autoremove option to remove stuff no longer required.
