Question ? unmount LogVol to make filesystem

how do i unmount a logical volume on a group to make a filesystem on it?
i'm using Fedora 8 and get this shell output:

[root@myserver ~]# mkfs -t ext3 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol02
mke2fs 1.40.2 (12-Jul-2007)
dev/VolGroup00/LogVol02 is mounted; will not make a filesystem here!

i'm using only 1 group, VolGroup00, and am aiming to copy my home directory to VolGroup00/LogVol02

Doesn't it work just by running
Code:
umount /path/to/mounted/volume
I'm not using LVM on more than one of my operating systems (one where I test encrypted installation), so I can't guarantee that..

i'd tried that but got:

umount: /home: device is busy
umount: /home: device is busy

don't know why it's output twice

may be you are still accessing the device via nautilus/konquerer.Stop that and then try again. Also don't go on output.Sometimes you still get device busy error even after success.

Cool success... and (limited) disaster!

Thanks harshal

closing konqueror didn't work but i succeeded after changing to runlevel 1 (got the idea in a forum post here). gave umount and mkfs commands from runlevel 1 command line. (for newbies like me, you must edit /etc/inittab to change from runlevel 5 to runlevel 1.)

there was a lot of response to mkfs, so i suspected success. to my dismay, i couldn't log in on my user name or find my home directory. nor could i create new users. iceweasel's equivalent wouldn't run on root either.

it's not all that bad; not much on that home directory that i'll miss, and i'd planned to reinstall fedora too. the experience had taught me some things...
