Unable to vi on Red Hat 3.4.3-9.EL4


Hi, I have just installed NRPE daemon on my linux Red Hat 3.4.3-9.EL4 server when i am changing in /etc/services i am unable to do that.

when checking permission it is showing

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 20373 Dec 13 15:42 services~

Can any body help me??

3.4.3-9.EL4?? that's not a version of redhat... google says it might be your gcc version? What are you actually seeing wrong? That file you listed is not the service file, it's got a different name...

when i hit cat /etc/version it is giving output below.
Linux version 2.6.9-5.ELsmp (bhcompile@decompose.build.redhat.com) (gcc version 3.4.3 20041212 (Red Hat 3.4.3-9.EL4)) #1 SMP Wed Jan 5 19:30:39 EST 2005

as well when i check uname -a output is
Linux test 2.6.9-5.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Jan 5 19:30:39 EST 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Hi again,,, i found that file /etc/services was write protected my problem has been solved. What id did
lsattr /etc/services

chattr -i /etc/services

I would strongly suggest you do an update on that kernel. Currently RHEL4 is on 2.6.9-89(the -89 being the important part). There have been a ton of security patches between -5 and -89, not to mention the hardware support improvements.
