Ubuntu 9.10 Vs Mandriva

I am new to Linux and have been using Ubuntu 9.04 then 9.10 and was reading all the problems that have been experienced in Ubuntu Distros. Is Mandriva better or worse? and Why? or what Linux Distro is the most stable? Is it worth the change if so? My unit is pretty loaded with other programs I finally got loaded. I am Running it on a ASUS M3n78-EM Board, AMD Quadcore with 4GB ram. I still have no sound after countless efforts (have sound on XP though)

Thanks

Unless you state your needs it is impossible to tell you which distribution is "better".

For stability, you can't do much better than Debian. Since Ubuntu is just a Newbified Debian derivative, it shouldn't be too difficult for users who are willing to make a modest effort.

If you are looking for help on your sound issues, please let us know what you have tried already.

Cheers,

Evo2.

Especially for something basic like sound, I would try to avoid switching distros to solve specific issues. As stated, tell us the specific problems.

Cyborgoat,
Not worth the change as you have shown you are not yet prepared. Talking about "stable" all versions are stable when they are submitted by the team as such. GNU/Linux is stable talking about the basics; what mostly isn't stable are the "newbies" like us who need more time "learning" in order to arrive into solutions over simple configuration like "sound".

I have one extremely stable: GNU/Linux-Slackware 12.2; it is rock-solid. But this is not for those who cannot even configure an Ubuntu to play sound.

My suggestion is for you to interact with Ubuntu community forum where sound problem is abundantly given answers. Ubuntu is debian based, there are debian documentations and how-tos, click this link.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
