I have a HP DV3 2155mx. I'm thinking about loading ubuntu 9.10. I have never used Linux before. Will Ubuntu work out of the box with my new system.

Most likely well supported, but you really need to look around a bit. Take a look here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/showcat.php/cat/521 for starters!

The Ubuntu 9.10 cd is " live ", so you can
run it before installing, to see if everything
works perfect.

Hello, I've just got an hp dv3-2230ea and installed Ubuntu 9.10 . Most things worked straight out of the box. The sound wouldn't work, so after looking around the 'net a bit and ...
added line
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4 enable_msi=1
to end of file:
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Sound now works well.
