ubuntu 8.1 installation on ibm a21 laptop results in 3 panel display mixup

Upon installing ubuntu 8.1 or 8.04 my display shows a segmented three panel screen of the initial desktop. The panels overlap and while i can move one by "pushing" the vertical bar, none of the data is complete. I suspect the laptop onboard video hardware, but cannot fix this.

Has anyone seen this problem and have a solution?

Thanks, Steve

Hi

When booting machine select "fail-safe" boot option, it will give you a terminal login, there try "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" command. You must know the kind of graphic chipset you have there.
