Ubuntu 8.04 Server not updating at all , stuck at waiting for headers

Hi All,

Configured a server instance of ubuntu 8.04 server (downloaded the software from the ubuntu site) and configured the install as a LAMP installation. Am trying to perform an apt-get or an aptitude update and am getting nowhere as every single time it gets hung up on "waiting for headers".

I have browsed google and see a ton of similar instances reported and discussed but no seemingly clear solutions have been offered at least that I have seen.

Would appreciate any definitive assistance from someone who has experienced and resolved a similar situation

TIA

John (Dallas)

post your sources.list here maybe their servers are busy or you just need to pick a different server for your updates from.

Debian typically will have hundreds of places you can pick n choose from for your default security and other updates. i can only guess it is the same for *buntu as it is just a fork from Debian.

FYI. i personally do not like any of the *buntu vs of Debian and prefer the original Debian. yes *buntu is a great way to break into linux, it is a nice OoTB way of doing things, but they remove way to much of what makes linux linux for my taste.

that does not mean i have not used it and even ran Edubuntu for my kids for about 2 years before i bought a MAC for the house. now the kids and the wife are on that. i run Sabayon that dual boots with WinXP Pro for my desktop (game in linux video edit in windows), and a Debian stable (4.0) for the media box connected to the TV in the living room.

Yeah, every single time this has happened to me it's been because of overloaded servers. I usually wait a couple hours or whatever then try again and it's fine. But, as has been said by lleb, using a different mirror might get you your update without having to wait.
