What is the best way to run Turbotax on Linux, if there is a way?

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

As far as I know there isn't. It has not worked using wine in a number of years.

It would be easier if you run Turbotax on a VM instead of trying to run it using Wine. From previous experiences, some Windows programs do not run well on Wine.
Good luck!

I'd do it online personally. Your information isn't any more or less secure running it locally. In the end it all goes through the internet one way or another. Is the way alot of things seem to be going. People want their programs and apps but want them platform independent.

I have a VM that I use just for Turbotax, its the best way if running Linux. I do not trust the online/web browser option, oh and I suggest mailing it in.

Whereas I have a very simple spreadsheet. Download the PDF forms including tax-tables from irs.gov. Fill them out and print them. Then mail them in, certified mail, return receipt requested. When the little green card comes back in the mail, scan it. Then, staple it to a copy of the forms and keep it f-o-r-e-v-e-r.

As others have said, if you do not have a Windows computer, a Windows VM is your best bet.

You can easily buy a legit Windows install discs at Amazon and similar sites. As far as I know, no commercial software for doing U. S. income taxes support the Linux OS.

I 've been using the web version for years without issue. No need for local software.

I wouldn't do my taxes via a website on a bet (can you say "Equifax"?), though I must admit that my friend has used TurboTax online for years and not experienced any issues.

Another vote for a Windows VM (in my case, for H&R Bock Tax Software).

I've been doing it with a spreadsheet for 20 years. Usually I need only small modifications between years. I get paper copies, fill them out by hand, then use that to fill out electronic copies with acroread (I always make a mistake by hand), mail them in. I haven't used registered mail.
