Trying To Get An Epson Perfection 1240U Scanner To Work With Debian.

I downloaded XSane to use with the scanner, and when I click XSane with the scanner plugged in, it scans for devices and then says "no devices available". When I click "Help", it gives 6 possible reasons. I am suspecting it might be reason number 3 - "The permissions for the device file do not allow you to use it - try as root". Unfortunately, it does not go beyond that and tell you what to do in root, or to change permissions. I wonder what I should do?

Reply to "Getting A Scanner To Work"

Thank you for the reply arckane. I went to the root shell, typed su and <password>, and then nano etc/group at the prompt. I get a page with GNU nano 2.0.7 and File: etc/group at the top of the page, and some entries at the bottom using the Ctrl key. I wonder what I do after that?
