Trouble Extracting a tar.xz

Hi, im pretty new to Linux i was introduced to it by trying to use my Chromebook to its fullest extent, im using a lower end Chromebook so i had to settle with Ubuntu LTS 16.04 With XFCE, i have made sure i have
xz-utils installed its says i have the newest version, i enter the command in a couple different ways and i get the message "Error is not recoverable: exiting now". I'm probably doing something really stupid...
