Trouble Booting Linux Mint 9 KDE on Macbook Pro 5.1

Last night I initiated an install of Mint on my external (via USB) 1TB WD My Book and then went to bed. Upon returning to my computer the installation had been completed successfully.

Upon selecting Linux from the rEFit boot loader it displays a black/blank screen with a blinking white underscore in upper left hand corner that is unresponsive to any input.

I don't know how I could have done anything wrong when I let the installer do all the work...

Any ideas on this one?

As suggested by Drakeo, don't do that. You'll never know what options were presented---and how would you ever set up username(s), password(s), etc.?

When installing to an external drive, pay attention to where you put the boot loader. For example, if it's on the external drive, then you can't get to your other OSes without that drive installed.
