The machine has an Atom 450N hyperthreaded processor clocked at 1.67GHz, 1GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM, a basic Intel graphics chipset, and a 250GB 5400rpm disk.

Reason for links: OP asked for suggestions and since nobody mentioned MX Linux... voila!
Should OP get into "trouble", there's top-notch and super friendly help to get on the MX Linux support forum https://forum.mxlinux.org

If the thing *really* ends up not being able to run Linux, what have OP lost then?

This model has Intel GMA 3150 which has excellent Linux support (unlike the OP's GMA 500).

so *NOT* poulsbo.
Please read the whole thread instead of asking others to explain it to you.

To OP:

I'll stick with my suggestion to test it with MX Linux and XFCE desktop or as other suggested, AntiX.

The chip isn't fully supported in that you won't get 3D gpu accelerated graphics and screen resolution is "locked" at the chip's max 1366x768.

Since I can't imagine you want to play 3D games on that little thing and only use it for - as you mentioned in first post - internet and mails, that lack of support should make no difference to you.

And that it "only" can run with highest resolution, can't really matter much either?

People are running that thing with both ubuntu and fedora, so...

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1984236

Should you have any difficulties, just go to https://forum.mxlinux.org for any help needed.

The AntiX crowd has home there as well.

And you certainly won't see things like this:

Seriously? What on earth are you talking about?

But please don't waste thread or time to respond. I may be new here, but I can take it...

Ubuntu 12.04 is "end of life" and completely unsupported in the year 2019.

While I appreciate you optimism and enthusiasm for helping the OP, posting outdated or misleading information isn't really helpful in the long run.

The OP currently has a functional operating system (Windows 7) so my philosophy is "first do no harm." Let's not encourage the OP to dump Windows unless we are confident Linux will run well! There are plenty of steps that can be taken to speed up Windows 7 on old hardware (like blocking scripts and multimedia in the web browser). I encourage @hector56 to stick with Windows 7 until it reaches "end of life" in January 2020. That is ample time to save up money for a linux-friendly replacement computer. The hours that could have been spent in frustration, troubleshooting Linux on Poulsbo, could instead be spent working a side job or gig, to raise funds for the new computer.
