This question has been asked before but, I just don't seem able to "Get It"! = Copy & Paste...

Several sites hold the data on how to copy and paste In Linux, Ubuntu and Linuxmint terminal....

But, I'm a complete numpty it seems as Ctrl+Shift+C or Ctrl+Insert or Ctrl+shift+v and Shift+insert never works for me.

All I'm trying to do is copy from the terminal to the PC clipboard then paste to Firefox to get an answer to a problem. Thus making the whole linux thing so difficult.

I know I'm stupid yeah but, why does it now work for me!
Months this has been happening!

Maybe dumb question: Is this a terminal window in a desktop where you have a mouse?

If so use the right mouse menu.

It usually tells you the key sequences along with gives you the ability.

I actually hate using the mouse, but I also gave up years ago trying to remember whatever the sequences are, so I use the mouse in this case.

OP: also, many terminals have the option , or do by default, a copy when you highlight a line or word. Then you just have to paste in the destination using middle button, normally.

In a GUI terminal, highlight the text, right click on it, select copy, then go to firefox URL bar, right click, then paste it.

sevendogsbsd + 1 ... middle button paste has long been one of my favourite things that linux could do but Windblows could not (although I do believe there is away to have this now)

It depends what kind of terminal you have. A lot of modern terminals like gnome-terminal have copy-cut-paste options on their edit menu. These give direct access to and from the X clipboard. But if you are using xterm or rxvt, you don't have those options. Select and middle-paste still work because they go through the mouse daemon gpm and not through X at all.

The X keyboard codes are ctrl-c, ctrl-x and ctrl-v. You don't use the shift key.

There is/was a method where you highlight text, hit enter to copy, and then middle mouse to paste. I definitely don't rely on that much for precision, I don't like the cursor to move, or miss when I execute an intention.

What I'm seeing here is that everyone picks something, "that works", and whatever standards there were supposed to be, vary.

It really depends on the window, the term included with LXDE/LXQT still throw shift in there. I don't know why. Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V won't always behave predictably there.

In xterm, which is very oldschool but I'm very fond of it, you just highlight in one window and shift+insert to paste in another. I've given up on trying to get things from there to paste in things like leafpad or the web browser, I have all kinds of solutions for sending text from the term to other windows. Most frequently, echo [paste] | leafpad ...this is tedious but I still prefer xterm overall to the fancier term windows which have their own annoyances. Going from other windows to xterm is trivial or works as you'd expect.

I've generally found ctrl-insert for copy, shift-insert for paste works, (including when using Windows).

...Except in KDE Konsole, where pasting with shift-insert works but copying with ctrl-insert doesn't (it prints "5~").

The usual ^C ^V ^X for copy / paste / cut work fine. Until you involve a terminal. Most times you can highlight what you want to copy and middle mouse in the place you want to paste it. Although this type of copy and paste is on a different clipboard. AKA it is NOT what you will paste if you right mouse -> paste or use ^V. Although once pasted with middle mouse you can put it on that clipboard. In a pinch I've used gmail as a text editor. So even on very crippled versions of windows, as long as it has a browser and the internet, there's that.
