Third Partition

Hi all, newbie to Linux.

I've been using a MacBook pro for a few years so out of touch with windows developments and linux. I've bought a second hand PC to experiment with. Eventually I want to turn it into a server but for now I want to learn linux on it and as a secondary exercise look at Windows 10 on it. I acquired it as a Windows 7 machine but have added Ubuntu to it. I now want to add Windows 10 on a third partition to take a look at it.
Is GParted the way I should be going? And btw is it possible to get a free trial of Windows 10 at the moment?

Well, I don't see why not but Microsoft just declared Windows 7 end of life (this year?) so you will encounter issues using it without them throwing up dialogs or other ugliness.

You can download Windows 10 and burn to a usb stick or dvd, yes. I just did that for a machine I want to sell. I do not know how long it will function without purchasing the OS though. You can do this from Microsoft's site and I would not personally go anywhere else for it or the download may be suspect.

Gparted should work but I have not dual booted with Windows in many years and certainly not between 2 different versions of Windows. Perhaps someone else in a similar situation can help further.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

If you have the Windows 7 key you can still install a free version of Windows 10. It still worked as of last August when I tried. You can download a 90 day trial of Windows Enterprise which is identical to the professional version.

Linux typically by default uses multiple partitions so it depends on how it was installed. In addition, gparted does not directly support LVM and we need to know how the drive is currently partitioned.

I've done this before, but don't remember all the details, I created a partition with gparted, don't remember if I formatted it ntfs before installing 10 or left the space empty. Windows 10 still works without a key, but some options will be disabled and some Microsoft products won't run/install without windows10 having a key.

Not sure if UEFI is at play or if windows 10 can work with mbr? It has been a very long time since I have played with windows so can't remember.

Windows 10 will work with mbr, it was an older bios system that had windows vista that I duel booted with a non-registered windows 10, also duel booted windows 10 on my laptop alongside windows7 and various Linux distro's in legacy mode on mbr type drive.
