thinking of switching to linux

I'm looking for a little help. I'm thinking of switching from windows nt to Linux but I need a little info first.

1. Why should I switch to Linux?
2. What are the pros and cons?
3. What about major programs I already use(i.e Mozilla Firefox, Messenger programs)? I already made the switch from that terrible IE7.

If anybody could help me it would be greatly appreaciated.
