Swedish version of Puppy Slacko ????

Hi!

i have installed "Slacko Puppy 6.3.2" on an older computer for a friend who helps a ONG. I am no expert but i have been using Linux on a daily base for over 10 years, and i am still looking for a perfect distro to meet my needs, which i think are quite particular.

I must say that was both surprised and impressed by the performance of "Slacko Puppy 6.3.2". I have used for 2 months for all may daily needs and it was not much it did not solved. I haven used youtube on it, but that is due to the fact that i am too lazy to fix it when i have other machines around me that take care of that. But most everything else i Could do on Slacko without having to do any significant tweakin. Oh Ok idid not produce music o on it, but then i don do it on most of my computers, I have 2 or 3 which are dedicated.

NOW my first question in this forum is: would it be possiblle to have a swedish version of Slacko. The prospective users will be senior swedes who live at the institution which will be getting this computer and many of them don understand english.

I got the programs into swedish but i understand swedish is not available for the system.

I tried Debian KDE which offers a swedish package, but i havenīt been able to use any desktop on this machine, and I have oh! tried so many. They will eventually start but soon freeze wit6h a variety of messages (in the logs).

I have had so much work that I am considering asking how much translation work would be involved - in case somebody else can put the translation text in some usable form ( I don't program at any serious level). I mean that I am considering doing the translation work if I understand it is a realistic goal for my possibilities. I have translated all sorts of material in many years (semi-professionaly) my only worry is the amount of text involved.

Will be glad to hear from you! And thanks to those that gave us Slacko !

@ fredmyra:-

This is all about 'locales'; combinations of languages/keyboard layouts, etc., for specific parts of the world.

I'm a long-term Puppy user, but I only ever need British English. If I were you, I'd ask the guys over at the Murga-Linux 'Puppy' Forums where to get the Swedish language packs & stuff from. I know I've occasionally seen it mentioned at odd times over the years.

You can find the Puppy Forum here:-

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/index.php

You'll probably need to sign up for an account. Be aware that there's issues with using GMail; Big Brother doesn't like that the ancient forum software is 'http'-only.....not 'https'. We're in the middle of gradually getting the forum updated to modern phpBB, but it's a slow process.....not helped by the fact that the website's owner is currently unreachable!

The lads & lasses will be able to point you in the right direction. Guaranteed.

Mike.

I'm pretty sure that Swedish is available as a system language, but it might require a little research & setup.
But, many of the puppy-specific helper utilities will remain English, no?

fredmyra, not sure what sort of hardware you're talking about.
To get a full Swedish experience I guess you'll have to stick with the major players - Ubuntu, Debian, with equally major desktop environments - XFCE, LXDE, Gnome - and distros that are based on that. Have a look-see here.

Desktop is the question

Thanks Ondoho!

As for programs or applications the most needed ones are Firefox and OpenOffice which i can get in Swedish.

But you put a finger on the core of my problems as i put in another thread since i found it would not fit here:

I am came here in a last desperate attempt, before quitting. But now I will consult the people at the Murga-Linux 'Puppy' Forums.
