Subnet mask info doesnt make sense to me

hi guys,

just reading a bit on networking:

In the subnet mask /27, the first
3 bits of the last byte are used to address the network, and the last 5 bits are used for addressing nodes. This becomes a bit clearer if you write down the address in a binary notation:

IP address:
212.209.113.33 = 11010100.11010001.00001010.00100001

Subnet mask:
/27 = 11111111.11111111.11111111.11100000

i get the IP address part,but whats up with the /27 in the subnet mask? where does /27 come in?

them bits add up to 224...
