su - operation not permitted

When I su from root into a non-root user, I get the message "/dev/vc/1: Operation not permitted". It does change users anyway, but I was wondering what this means and if I need to fix it.

Thanks,
jrtayloriv

In order to use the su - command, the user you're running itf rom has to be a member of the wheel group. As an example, I have a normal user named jim. If I want to become root from jim, I have to make sure that jim is a member of the wheel group. You can check on this by opening up /etc/group and looking for a line that looks like this:

Code:
wheel:x:10:root,jim,test
Where root, jim, and test are members of that group. Just add the user name to that line like above, and you'll be able to use su -
