Stuck in X !!

I know this must be a simple solution ... but I can't find it.
I'm trying to install some new Nvidia drivers and when I go to install them I get the message that I am running X and need to exit it before installing.

I'm running RH9 and when I logout and go back to the graphical logon screen I cannot choose to boot to a simple terminal, rather than into X. I tried doing a killall X while running X, but it simply brings me back to that GUI logon screen. How can I stop X and get to a terminal?

I miss the "old" way where I had to type startx to get into X and where I logged out of X and it went straight back to terminal mode....

Thanks

Open a terminal and, as root, type init 3.

runlevel 3 is a multiuser environment with networking but no GUI (although you can start X from here too).

After you are done, type: init 5 (as root)

Switch to runlevel 3. Add '3' as an option at boot, or open a terminal window and run 'init 3' (as root). 'init 5' brings you back.
