stuck at redhat 9 login

hi

i tried to install linux several times and I never get it right and give up

this is yet another attempt to get something working

I installed redhat 9
it installed grub
I booted the system through grub
then it gave me some weird error messages, something like no devices found..

so I end up at this screen
it says login:

i type in root and the password
the system then says

[localhost@root]:

something like that ^

I'm not sure what exactly but it seems like i'm in the root directory or something, and I have no clue where to go now

sorry for asking such a pathetic question, I dont know where else to go

Hi.

I'm assuming you want some sort of graphical desktop to look at, yes?

If so, just type in

startx

That should get you started. If the screen goes blank, then goes back to the root@localhost stuff, then X hasn't been configured properly - hit me back whatever happens.

I tried starx and just like you said it sent me back to
[root@localhost root]#

one of the error messages that came up was something among the lines of "no screens detected"

where do I go from here?

Hi again.

What sort of video card have you got?

I'll bet it's a nVidia.

I'm sorry for not clarifying all the details

Installation went fine, I did not have any problems at all. Which is why I dont understand how I can be getting these weird responses from the system.

I have an ati rage 128 video card.

If everything went fine until the first boot. It may be that the system is having problems with your video card. Try putting the cd back in and setting your video for VESA - 16mb and 1024x768 wth freq. at 30-60 hf / 50-100 vf assuming you have a decent modern 17-19" CRT. All modern cards "should" work at that setting. That will at least get you up and running if you don't have the correct drivers for the card. You can do that from the command line as well but I'm to new to remember the exact command. That is what I had to do with my "unsupported" SiS740.
