From my machine:
Code:
[baldrick@localhost baldrick]$ whereis startx
startx: /usr/X11R6/bin/startx /usr/bin/X11/startx
[baldrick@localhost baldrick]$
Has it possibly been deleted?

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I guess ur right. Weird thing is that this is a brand new install of srage and I just did apt-get "install xserver-xfree86". All I have in hte two folders you've mentioned are to files; X and XFree86.

May be there's something I need to do after apt had finished to "initialise"?

i'll try to re-install.

Many thyanks

OK, i've reinstalled and found there was a broken link (thanks to http://ccfaq.valar.co.uk/modules.php...rticle&sid=182).

now -config throws an error ,"XFree86 has found a valid card configuration. Unfortunately the appropriatedata has not been added to xf86PciInfo.h"

Huh?
