Soundcard Issues with Slackware 10.0

hey there, im sorta a noob when it comes to linux, ive managed to make use of the sound on my laptop for about a week now but as of last night the soundcard just dropped out of site. "Soundcard not detected /usr/dsp/ does not exist" etc etc.. ive seen this multiple times on the forum and i have gone ahead and followed the tips/instructions to solve the issue with no sort of luck including updating the alsa drivers/libs/utils/oss. when i was trying doing modprobe after everything was installed to add it to the krnl nothing took, stating files were missing etc..im sure you all have heard this a million times before but if anyone else has any other suggestions other than recompiling the krnl from scratch i would very much appreciate it. also if it helps after i installed the alsa drivers it could not find the soundcard (its an intel AC 82801 (i believe)) but before i had installed the alsa files it did pick it up, and the /usr/dsp/ was linked to dsp0. so once again if anyone has any ideas at all what so ever i would really appreciate any help provided, thanks in advance for your help=]~

People will be better able to help you if you provide more info. What laptop exactly ? What distro are you using ? More info is better than less.

Looks ok so far, can you also post the output of 'lsmod'. And what is this about:
Quote:
when i was trying doing modprobe after everything was installed to add it to the krnl nothing took, stating files were missing etc..
What modules were you trying to modprobe ? I assume that you got some type of error, could you post that too, exactly as it is given ?

ive also been reading other posts on different forums in regards having to compile a custom krnl, just wondering if that is required if so will i need to update to every krnl in order (IE 2.4.28>2.4.29>2.4.30 etc..) or can i just go and upgrade to the latest krnl and work from there?

If you think it's the kernel, then get the latest kernel and compile that, but Slackware 10.0 is designed to work with 2.4.x kernels, so it may not work well with 2.6.x ones.

But, if that's your entire 'lsmod' then I don't you have any modules loaded for your sound card.
Typical ones for AC'97 are:
Code:
snd_intel8x0
snd_ac97_codec
ac97_bus
snd_pcm
Are you sure you didn't change anything in your setup to stop these from loading ?
