Sound Not Working

Hi. I have a CentOS 6.4 64-bit Linux PC. I tried to play a few .wav files with paplay or Totem, but no sound is played.

I have speakers connected to the correct output on the PC, I also tried headphones. It doesn't look like anything is muted. I don't think I have ever heard sound played on this machine with the current OS (sound works okay if I boot the same machine into WIndows, or an older version of CentOS, so I know the hardware is okay). I don't know where to start debugging this since the pulseaudio is new to me. Where would I start to try and figure out what the problem is?

Also, if I run 'pacmd' it says: No pulseaudio daemon running or not running as session daemon.

then pulseaudio is not yet running

how about posting a screen shot of this command

Code:
alsamixer
altho I have not completed the howto for alsa, you may like to see the mixer section of this link
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...j70/edit?pli=1

crash course is
press m to mute or unmute output device

press spacebar to activate or de-activate input devices

page up to raise volumes fast or use up arrow for slower

alsamixer is normally a part of alsa-utils if you see command not found in your distro

good luck

ps I like tinypic.com so I can keep any images when I upload them
