Looks to my untrained eye like it's missing a driver- Calibre seems to find three drives, but they are greyed out (with device type set to anything). Debug shows no drives (as perhaps expected):

Reason: sp.
What? Could you explain what exactly you are trying to do and what is failing?
What do you mean a "linux device cannot be seen by another linux machine"?
What exactly is the relevance of the output you included in your post?
Also, if you put output and such things in code brackets, your post will be easier to read. [code] <-- like that.. And then you need one with /code to end it, but also in brackets.
I'm not one to whine about bad posts, I try to answer regardless, if there is any clue as to what it is about. Unfortunately with your post, I'm afraid it is impossible to answer. I have no clue at all what it is about. So please try to edit your post and make it more clear what it is about, and easier to read. As it is I'm sure you will not get much help, but if you fix it the chance of getting help is alot better.

I am trying to connect a Sony PRS-500 eReader (which runs a form of Linux) to my laptop, which is running Xubuntu (also a form of Linux..)

It shows that the copmputer is detecting the device, but it is not being seen as removable storage.

I imagine not- there are a few posts with people trying to deal with this device and no solution. I figured it was worth a shot anyway before I go out and buy a different reader or laptop..
See the last post in the link below. Although you probably could transfer files using a card reader between the two devices it is probably worth buying a different reader.
Ok, well.. After my first approach that day, I did read up about that device "Sony PRS-500" and I realized what it was etc. And during my reading, if I remember correctly, I found out that the issue is not so much with the connection of this device as it is the format of the ebooks contained inside it.
I know very little about e-books, so I thought I would leave the topic to someone else who might be able to help. But from what I read and remember still, my conclusion is/was:
- The device can be connected to a GNU/Linux machine (and recognized/used etc)
- There seemingly is a way to deal with the format of the ebooks somehow with a software
- Not sure how all this would work together/if it would work in the end
Thus I gave up my reading on the topic. I'm not sure it CAN work alltogether, possibly. I would say I am a cautious optimist, and that someone else can help you better than I can from this point on.
