slackware many questions

I just installed Slackware 10.1 on my toshiba A10 laptop. I have been using FreeBSD for some time now and decided to go with linux in order to use certain programs I need. Now I have some problems.
1. I tried to compile a new kernel with scsi support and with the two toshiba options. I got it to compile and it boots, but now the X server will not work.
2. DRI will not work using the i810 driver in Xorg. DRI works on other linux distros and I was wondering if this could be fixed easily.
3. My externel usb hard drive will not mount even after I load a scsi kernel. I tried almost all the sda devices.

Sorry to bomb this forum with probably newbie linux questions, but linux is new to me and im trying my best. The only reason im not using fedora or mandrake is because I read that if you want to really learn linux you should go with slackware. Thanks guys.

For the USB drive type as root 'tail -f /var/log/messages' in a console (without ' & ') then plug the drive in and read what messages pop up.

One should tell you where Slack is seeing the device, which will help you mount it. Remember that Slack is now using udev instead of devfs so the entries in /dev are created as needed AFAIK.

I think you probably need to post some error messages to get better help with the X server problem.
