Shutdown command?

I know this is a dumb problem to have, but I don't know the command to shutdown a Linux box from the console. I always just hit Crl+Alt+Del, waited for it to reboot to the boot loader, and then hit the power switch. I realized that I didn't know the command when my buddy was sitting at my computer and asked me how to turn it off. It was a little embarassing to have to say "I don't know."

Please advise.

Don't be embarrassed, i've heard at one point that Linus Torvalds himself once asked the same question.

Really? Wow. Sort of like Henry Ford asking "So. How do we start this auto-mo-bile?"

Thanks.

I like "shutdown -r now" for the reboot function
