Question shutdown after authentication?

Hi,
This may be silly but (paranoid as I am) I do find this strange, my laptop (Xubuntu) had an update earlier, and as I wanted to shutdown, the system wanted an authentication, I hit cancel and the system logged me out, I logged back in and did not have to authenticate anymore to shutdown...glitch or..."trouble"?
Thanks
Thor
PS - I ran RKhunter and it found nothing...

Xfce uses sudo as a backend to do stuff like reboot and shutdown, coincedentaly I had a similar problem recently ( not on xubuntu ) after doing some upgrades, sudo amongst them, xfce greyed out the shutdown/rebbot buttons, after logging out and restarting from the console everything is back to normal, probably just an xfce quirk, if it doesn't happen again I wouldn't worry too much.

That same thing has recently happened to me on some Fedora 20/21 computers after doing a yum update. After restarting the authentication prompt never re-appears.
