Should I delete temp files in Linux

Ubuntu 13.04

Should I delete temp files? Does it provide any performance gain. As of late, I've seen a lot of performance drop off that I cannot explain.

Thank you in advance.

Don't delete files unless you know what they are and that its safe to do so.
It won't improve performance unless your disk is basically full and you desperately need the space.
Describe the performance issue(s) you have; give evidence, not guesses.
Change the Title of the thread to match or ask the Mods (via the Report button) to do so for you.

When you experience a slowdown, you can use the top or htop (if it's installed) commands to see what's using the most memory.

You might also check your swap usage. Heavy swapping can produce noticeable slowing, especially on machines with lighter memory. This article outlines several ways to do that.
